Arizona's National Forests To discover the national forests of Arizona, please select a forest from the list below. Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest Coconino National Forest Coronado National Forest Kaibab National Forest Prescott National Forest Tonto National Forest The lands under the management of the USDA Forest Service in Arizona run the gamut from the bright, saguaro-studded desert of the Western filmmaker’s dreams to actual forests, crisp and piney in the mountain air. The forests retain traces of the former human inhabitants: prehistoric civilizations, Spanish explorers, mountain men and miners, 19th century army troops, and modern settlers. A word of warning: while the word “forest” certainly applies to the large continuous stretch of ponderosa pines which traverses the heights of the Kaibab, the Coconino, and the Apache Sitgreaves, it certainly does not describe the Tonto which contain only a few isolated stands of trees. This forest is a Sonoran Desert paradise, with large recreational lakes, mild winters, and low-lying mountainous backcountry. The Coronado also has few “tree-forests” compared to the large open streches of saguaro forests. Conifer forests in the Coronado are located on the “Sky Islands;” isolated mountains which rise abruptly from the desert floor and contain uniquely evolved alpine ecosystems.
