What's a PUBLIC LAND Anyway? (Part 6 of a series)

National Wild and Scenic Rivers
National Wild and Scenic Rivers have outstanding natural, cultural, and recreational values. Rivers are classified by level of human impact as wild, scenic, or recreational. Wild rivers are free of dams and generally inaccessible except by trail. They represent vestiges of primitive America. Scenic rivers have relatively untouched shorelines but may be accessible in places by roads. Recreational rivers usually have more development along their shorelines, are accessible by road, and may have been dammed or diverted in the past.

The National Wild and Scenic Rivers System includes 166 rivers in 38 states and protects more than 11,000 miles of rivers.

Administering agencies: Bureau of Land Management, US Forest Service, National Park Service, US Fish & Wildlife Service
Established: 1968
Total area under the National Wild and Scenic Rivers System: 11,000 miles
